As usual, I cannot be responsible for any damage to
your machines when you will experiment the following
tutorial.
(webmaster's note: the combo comes from: www.avitos.com)
Why ?
Well, as lot of Pismo owners, LG DVD-drive is dead
1)
I recieved it in February 2003.
Not that old
2)
The combo just « thrown » in the bay.
Unit number: 1, meaning slave.
Firmware 1006, drive not supported by DiscBurner.
3)
Recorder Info in Toast 5.2 : support OK
4)
It is CDR 24x, indeed.
5)
I said «slave» !!!
6)
Into the laptop, for flashing operation.
7)
The original face did not fit
8)
A little try in the PC before the «big jump».
Target ID: 0, meaning master.
The laptop can handle CSEL, meaning it selects the combo
drive master.
9)
Toshiba specs in the laptop PC with firmware 1006.
Once flashed in firmware 1706, the PC crashed!!!
10)
It's normal, firmware 1706 is not CSEL and
«force» the drive in master.
We do not care, final target is the Pismo.
11)
What else to say?
12)
Here it is!
13)
After firmware flashed in the laptop PC.
Unit number: 0, meaning master.
Firmware 1706, and still no support by Discburner.
14)
I correctly said «master».
15)
Recorder Info in Toast 5.2: support still OK after
flashing operation.
16)
After hacking ToshibaCDR.device.plugin file with Hexedit.
Fully supported by DiscBurner.
YEAH!!!
17)
I said it is supported by DiscBurner !!!!
Still 24x.
18)
Ugly lateral face, not for too long I hope
There is even a LED for the fools who gonna spend time
looking at it instead of looking at the screen

Bootability:
The combo drive is bootable pressing ALT at startup.
We must « refresh » once when the
pointer is ready, because the boot CD does not appear
directly.
The combo drive does not boot with C at startup.
The combo drive does not boot after selecting the boot CD
in «startup disk», but
pressing C AFTER, iit
boots!!!
Another Pismo owner simply soldered the connectors 45 and
47 on the intermediate board between the drive and the back
of the bay, instead flashing the firmware: the drive becomes
master with 1006 firmware and upon his reply, it boots with
C at startup (SD-R2312 too).
Zone-free:
Unfortunately, at the time I write this, no Mac firmware
flash utility is available.
We must go thru a PC, and flash in X006 or X706.
For international travellers
Front (or lateral
) face:
Quite uneasy to adapt, but a nice challenge.
Pictures soon
Eject button:
Big s
. too, so
nice challenge as well.
2 solutions:
Drill a hole to allow a paperclip
Extend the plastic cylinder until it almost push the
eject mecanism (no need of paperclip, a pen is enough as
originally)
Pictures soon too
Now (8 mai 2003), in fact:

30)
To force the Toshiba in master mode, weld the pins 45
& 47 together.
But on the intermediate board between the drive and the rear
face of the craddle.
See the connector on the photo, on the Apple logo side.
